Expansion: Musings for Meditation | April ‘26

Expansion Theme

Expansion ThemeWhen we consider the concept of “expansion,” different perspectives emerge depending on the field of inquiry. A businessman might view it through the lens of growth of his business, while a physics teacher might discuss it in terms of spatial dimensions.

However, for a yogi, expansion delves deeper, intertwining with both physical and spiritual growth.

In the northern hemisphere, spring heralds a time of unfurling and unfolding. After a season of introspection and stillness, we begin to emerge from our winter cocoons. The upcoming equinox brings us to a balance of light and dark, and as we approach the 21st, we find ourselves stepping into a season of increased light and openness.

In yoga, expansion is a crucial theme

It manifests in our asana practice, where we cultivate greater movement capabilities. In pranayama, we consciously expand our lungs, allowing vital lifeforce energy to flow through us. Yet, the most profound aspect of expansion occurs on a spiritual level. Through regular practice, we learn to break free from unconscious contraction and the clutter both internal and external that hinders our growth and expansion.

The ultimate goal of yoga is union with the universe

This union occurs as the individual self, or Jiva, expands to rediscover its connection with the universal or supreme consciousness. Rather than perceiving a conflict between oneself and the world, the Self grows to encompass all existence.

This expansiveness can be likened to a subtle, creative pulse of the universe, embodying the inherent vibration of universal consciousness. This consciousness is in constant flux, manifesting into and out of form.

Understanding expansion

To understand the mechanics of this expansion, we can look to the term “centrifugal,” which describes a force that acts outward from a centre, derived from the Latin terms ‘centrum’ (centre) and ‘fugere’ (to flee). In non-dualistic yoga, this dynamic is represented by Shakti, the active force, which is never separate from Shiva, (the inert aspect of consciousness) but seeks to expand itself, be curious about itself, witness and to know itself.  While the introspective energies of autumn and winter invite us to turn inward and tap into our innate Shiva power, Shakti represents the expression of that consciousness through our actions.

“…many of us navigate life unaware of our inherent divinity, often resorting to judgment, conquest, separation, and control qualities that diverge from our true essence.”

Every thought, word, and deed is an expression of this consciousness. Yet, many of us navigate life unaware of our inherent divinity, often resorting to judgment, conquest, separation, and control qualities that diverge from our true essence. Our calling is to yoga, not merely as a physical practice but as a means to awaken awareness. This awareness encourages us to unite, connect, and integrate all parts of ourselves, even those we often hide or reject.

In this journey, we recognise that all beings and things are interconnected, including those who may trigger discomfort within us. Beneath our differences lies the same supreme consciousness that binds us.

The Pancha Vayus or five energetic forces within the body regulate our physical, mental, and energetic functions. When we consider the term “expansion,” we can relate it to Vyana, the force that moves energy from our centre to the periphery of our bodies and outward into our energy fields. This energy governs our circulatory, lymphatic, and nervous systems.

Expansion in practice

As we reflect on the theme of expansion, we might ask ourselves: What energies am I currently putting out into the field? When I expand, what am I expanding into, and how is that received in the world around me?

This exploration of expansion invites us to deepen our practice and embrace our interconnectedness, ultimately leading to a greater understanding of ourselves and our place within the universe.
