The philosophy behind the day

According to the yogic and tantric traditions, the human body is a microcosm of the universe itself.

The same forces that shape the stars, oceans, mountains, forests, and skies are also present within us. Known as the Maha Bhutas, Space, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth, these five great elements form the building blocks of all manifested existence. They are not simply concepts found in nature, they live within our bodies, minds, emotions, and energetic systems, influencing how we move, think, feel, communicate, digest, create, rest, and relate to the world around us.

When the elements are in harmony, we often experience a sense of vitality, clarity, groundedness, emotional balance, and connection. When they become excessive, depleted, or out of balance, we may notice this reflected in our physical health, emotional wellbeing, energy levels, relationships, or overall sense of ease in life.

This special 2 hour Restorative Yoga Workshop invites you into a deeply embodied exploration of the five elements through the wisdom of the Tanmatras, the subtle sensory qualities associated with each element.

In yogic philosophy, each element expresses itself through a particular sensory experience

  • Space (Akasha) through Sound

  • Air (Vayu) through Touch

  • Fire (Agni) through Form and Appearance

  • Water (Jala) through Taste

  • Earth (Prithvi) through Smell

These sensory gateways offer us a direct pathway into experiencing the elements rather than simply understanding them intellectually.

Throughout our practice, restorative yoga postures will be interwoven with sensory rituals designed to awaken each elemental quality within the body and mind.

We will explore:

  • Space through Sound, allowing the resonance of Koshi chimes whilst in savasana to invite spaciousness, receptivity, and deep listening.
  • Air through Touch, experiencing the subtle language of touch and sensation as a doorway into movement, connection, and presence.
  • Fire through Sight using candle gazing to explore focus, transformation, clarity, and inner vision.
  • Water through Taste, drinking ceremonial cacao as a practice of nourishment, feeling, receptivity, and flow.
  • Earth through Smell, working with sage and sacred scent to cultivate grounding, stability, belonging, and connection to the natural world.

Alongside the restorative practices, there will be opportunities for reflection and journaling, inviting you to explore how each element currently expresses itself within your own life.

The shift you might feel…

As we move through the elements, the intention is not to perfect or control them, but to deepen our relationship with them. Through awareness, we begin to recognise that the same intelligence moving through nature is also moving through us.

This workshop offers an opportunity to slow down, regulate the nervous system, restore depleted energy, and reconnect with the elemental wisdom already present within.

By bringing greater balance to the elements within, we cultivate greater balance in the way we meet life itself, becoming more grounded when challenges arise, more adaptable during change, more resilient in uncertainty, and more connected to our innate capacity for healing, presence, and wellbeing.
